Link building is one of those things where there are a lot more ways of doing it wrong than there are of doing it right. Ergo, this list is not even close to exhaustive. Here are ten very common link building mistakes, but if you have ever tried link building yourself, then you can probably come up with a few extra ones yourself.
If you honestly want to avoid too many link building mistakes, then simply try to create a broad link profile. Link from a wide variety of websites in a wide variety of ways. Sure, some of them will not be as effective as others. But, this is better than robotically linking in the same way from a similar number of websites, as this is where mistakes go from being mistaken in outright incorrect link building.

1 - Not knowing what a relevant website it

A relevant website is one that is going to attract your target audience. You need to look at link building as something other than a way of making your website more search engine friendly. You need to look at your link building with a mind to trying to get direct traffic. You need to link from sites that attract your target viewer so that they would naturally want to see your website. The further you move away from this notion, then the more likely it is that you are linking from a site that is not relevant, ergo you are making a typical link building mistake.

2 - Not knowing what relevant surrounding text is

This occurs when people put their links into articles and blog posts that simply do not go to the link. For example, a link to a dinosaur website is not going to fly very well on a blog post or article about knitting.

3 - Trying to insert inappropriate keywords in the surrounding text

This is where an article about one thing has inappropriate keywords weaved into it. The keywords will suit the anchor text, but will not suit the text it is in. The SEO value of the link will therefore be diminished.

4 - Inappropriate anchor text for where you are linking from

This may be keyword filled anchor text, or anchor text that is not suitable for the website or blog you are linking from. The text surrounding the anchor text may not be very good, or the anchor text itself may contradict the message of the page. These are just a few factors that will negatively affect your SEO.

5 - Anchor text that is made up of keywords

This is more of a black-hat method. Instead of describing the page it lands upon, the anchor text is just a string (big or small) of keywords. This sort of thing will get your website penalized.

6 - Incorrect anchor text choices

You may accidentally add anchor text that does not describe the page it is linking to. Worse still it may just say something such as “click me” or “click here” which is not describing the linked page at all.

7 - Linking from sites or pages that have “no-follow” tags

This will mean that you will get direct traffic but will not get any SEO benefit. Ironically, if you make any of the mistakes on this article, then this is the sort of comment section, forum or website that you should make it on, as the search engines will never find out.

8 - Spamming links onto sites so that they are quickly deleted

When you spam a link it is a bad thing to do anyway. However, it also has a side effect of being deleted fairly quickly. In your analytics you will see that you have a high number of broken links. Google will interpret this as proof that you have been conducting black-hat SEO and will penalize you for it.

9 - Linking from articles that do not attract your target viewer

If the article that you are linking from is not attended (at least in part) by your linked website's target audience, then the link will not be relevant. It will therefore hold very little SEO value and will drive very little direct traffic.

10 - Lying in your anchor text in order to get more traffic

This is often done under the mistaken belief that traffic makes money. This is only really true if you are running an impressions affiliate advert, and even then, the high bounce rate is going to get you banned from the affiliate network.
